Spring Home Security Checklist: Protect Your Property This Season

As the days get longer and we spend more time outdoors, spring is the perfect opportunity to review your home security. Burglars often take advantage of open windows, unlocked doors, and homeowners distracted by garden work. This comprehensive checklist will help you secure your property this season.

1. Check All External Locks

Winter weather can take its toll on locks. Moisture, frost, and temperature changes can cause mechanisms to seize or become stiff. Test every external door lock—front, back, side, and garage. If any feel sticky or difficult to operate, it's time for maintenance or replacement.

Pay special attention to UPVC door mechanisms. These are particularly susceptible to wear, and a lock that doesn't engage fully is a security risk. If you need to lift or push the door to lock it, the mechanism may need adjusting or replacing.

2. Upgrade to Anti-Snap Cylinders

If you haven't already, spring is an excellent time to upgrade to British Standard anti-snap locks. Lock snapping remains the most common burglary method in the UK, and standard Euro cylinders offer little resistance. TS007 3-star rated cylinders like Ultion or ABS provide complete protection against this attack.

3. Inspect Window Security

Check all window locks are functional and that keys are accessible (but not visible from outside). Many older windows have worn catches that can be forced with minimal effort. Consider upgrading to key-locking handles on ground floor and easily accessible windows.

4. Review Garden Security

Overgrown hedges can provide cover for intruders. Trim back shrubs near windows and doors. Secure garden sheds and outbuildings—these are often targeted for tools that can then be used to break into your home. A good quality padlock and hasp is essential.

5. Test Outdoor Lighting

Motion-sensor lights are an excellent deterrent. Check that all external lights are working, replace any blown bulbs, and clean sensors that may have become dirty over winter. Well-lit entry points make properties far less attractive to opportunistic burglars.

6. Secure Side Access

Gates and side passages are often overlooked. Ensure side gates are tall, lockable, and can't be easily climbed. Consider adding anti-climb strips to fence tops near entry points.
